About us

What started with a desire to build a business that would allow him to support his young family, Malcolm Thomas founded Waimea Truck & Tractor in 1980. Located just down the road from our current site in Richmond, Nelson, Malcolm used to sell spare parts for – you guessed it – trucks and tractors.

Kingsley and Malcolm ThomasEarly on, Malcolm required a crane truck to move parts around for his own business and on purchasing what was at that stage the South Island’s largest Palfinger crane, he soon realised the demand for crane work in the Nelson area.

This demand for outwork resulted in the start of our crane rental division and the work we did in those early days gave us valuable experience in matching the right crane with the job at hand. We officially changed our name to Waimea Truck and Crane in 2006 and since then have continued to tailor our product and service offering to the needs of the utility sector and businesses requiring access and lift solutions.

While Malcolm’s still very much part of the business, his son Kingsley took over the reigns as General Manager in 2012. Kingsley has been the driving force behind the continued growth of Waimea, recognising opportunities in the utilities sector and securing the exclusive New Zealand dealership for several well-known international EWP and crane brands.

All these years later, Waimea now employs 17 people, including several members of the Thomas family.

We take great pride in being agents for a range of market-leading brands and the preferred partner for the utilities sector for advice, sales and rental of truck-mount solutions. And for Malcolm - he’s truly fulfilled the dream that got him into business all those years ago, laying the foundations for a business that now supports his extended family and the wider community.

We believe

We believe that every person who works with access or lifting equipment can improve their productivity and safety with Waimea because of our extensive specialist knowledge, hands-on experience and a product range that is fit for purpose.

How we do it

Our truck-mount access and lifting solutions have been built especially for New Zealand conditions but, first and foremost, we are in the business of building long-term partnerships.

We’ve built long-term partnerships with our overseas suppliers and use their quality EWPs and cranes to build innovative solutions that work in New Zealand.

Many of our staff have been with us for a long time and most people in our office have hands-on experience operating and setting up lifting and access equipment. They get a real kick out of designing and building well-balanced bucket and crane trucks that are easy to use and fit for purpose.

Interest in machines started early for the Thomas familyThis in turn helps us build strong partnerships with our customers. We find out exactly what their needs are before recommending a solution that will help them get the job done, whether it’s a brand-new build-up, a rental truck, or a toolbox for their work ute. We provide extensive training to operators and have dedicated after-sales support staff because we believe a long-term relationship with our customers only just begins when they sign the contract.
